Job Description

Job Summary: The Welder II is an intermediate-level, skilled position performing a variety of welding and related tasks (e.g., brazing and cutting) using gas and/or electric welding equipment. The Welder II receives specific work assignments under limited supervision and resolves problems with limited supervisory assistance. The Welder II’s work involves considerable skill and is subject to final inspection and test. The Welder II is expected to practice and adhere to the Company’s Six Sigma principles.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following with other duties assigned as necessary:

 

  • Reviews job orders (written or verbal) and interprets welding specifications according to code certifications, alignment, dimensional and general inspection requirements.

  • Sets up jobs, fits and positions weldments using fixtures, jigs, etc., and varies welding techniques, materials and equipment within recognized limits or procedures.

  • Performs welding and related tasks such as surface preparation, thermal cutting, grinding, etc.

  • Inspects welds and welded surfaces for proper bonds.

  • Cleans and maintains work area (daily), welding equipment and other tools of the trade.

  • Works in a safe manner at all times.

  • Insures that all work is done in accordance with and adheres to IEA’s ISO and Quality standards.

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties.

 

Physical Demands:

Maximum lifting requirement (pounds): 50 (infrequently), 25 (frequently).

Maximum moving requirement (pounds): 100.

Maintaining physical condition necessary for the following: Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, and twisting upper body; occasional climbing or sitting.

Working at heights off the ground up to: 10 feet.

Vision requirements: Close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception.

 

Work Environment:

Work location: Welding shop, metal fabrication/assembly shop.

Exposure to: Hot objects (burns), glare (flashing), sparks and flying objects (metal chips and scale), fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical equipment.

Personal protective equipment requirement: Company-supplied, flame-resistant overclothing, safety mask and shield, safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear protection as necessary.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Key skills, abilities and knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of standard welding principles and techniques including oxyacetylene welding, arc welding, and inert gas welding (e.g., TIG, MIG).

  • Ability to read and understand weld specs, shop drawings, job layouts and blueprints.

  • Ability to use basic math, measuring instruments (rules, etc.), gauges and templates.

  • Knowledge of working properties of structural metals and welding materials.

  • Skill in using and maintaining welding equipment and related tools of the trade.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and the ability to follow safe work practices.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with others.

  • Experiential: Three or more years of general welding experience.

  • Educational: Formal apprenticeship training is desirable but not essential.

  • Certificates, Licenses: Fork lift operator certification.
